In addition to its finance-related strengths, Rotman offers a rather unique approach to core business pedagogy. Students complete a series of core courses in their first year that emphasize generalized business skills and the ability to think across functional disciplines.
For 11 years running, Rotman has been ranked as the 1 business school in Canada by Financial Times. The full-time MBA program breaks down to 16 months of rigorous academic study with a four-month internship opportunity.
Curriculum The Rotman full-time MBA is a two-year program designed to be completed with 16 months of classwork and a four-month paid internship. Prior to joining the month program, students take the MBA Pre-Program, which consists of several preparatory academic courses, as well as workshops on communication skills and leadership.
These take place over the course of three weeks in August. Subsequently, students attend Orientation, a two-day event during which students learn about the resources available at Rotman, followed by Orientation Camp, a weekend retreat hosted by second-year students.
International students attend International Students Orientation Week prior to the pre-program in order to gain a better understanding of Canadian business culture.
Next, Term One, which lasts nine weeks, consists of coursework in statistics, strategy, finance, and accounting, whereas Term Two includes courses in leadership, customer management, operations management, and the economic environment of business.
Lastly, the six-week Capstone Term includes coursework in finance, managerial accounting, and managerial negotiations.
It also includes the Business Problem Solving Capstone, a course in which students learn to use modeling to solve current business problems. By the second year of study, Rotman students may choose an MBA major in subjects such as brand management or sustainability.
To supplement their studies, students can choose from over 90 elective courses in subjects ranging from integrative thinking to accounting. In addition, full-time MBA students participate in the flexible internship program, which allows students to take an internship after their first year.
Internship periods range from May to August, September to December, and January to April, allowing students the flexibility to pursue an internship at a convenient time. International study options are also available.
For instance, students may take a semester abroad at 23 partner schools in 16 countries, including China, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Additionally, international study tours give students a chance to explore areas of the world such as China, Latin America, and India while gaining a firsthand experience of business practices around the world.
In addition, in the Doing Business Internationally DBI Intensive Program, which acts as a combination of the exchange programs and the study tours, students spend a week or two in areas such as China or Taiwan to gain specific knowledge about conducting business in these countries.
